🐈‍⬛ // Day 12 of #memademay2023 cooling off at the mall in this #lododress that I haven’t worn since I was 9 months pregnant 2 years ago. I remember that was an equally hot day and I felt so uncomfortable in it.

What a difference not being pregnant makes 😅 (duh) I feel so much more comfortable, though some things still bug me - like the stiffness of the fabric (recommended for this pattern) and the V-shape of the neckline.

I love the sleeves and the fit though, so it’s likely I will modify the neckline (to a crew, or to a shallower V) and try this again in a cotton jersey instead! Hmm any thoughts on whether a bamboo jersey would work or will it just end up looking like pyjamas? 🤔

💦// Day 11 of #memademay2023 in my new tee struggling to deal with the crazy heat 🥵 I may or may not have eaten way too much ice cream lately.

This is my third tee in recent times but I’ve still yet to really get the hang of the neckline insertion without the puckering at the CF. I’ve yet to try basting in before serging, but I can’t imagine it will help overmuch? 🤔 Am I missing something? Tips welcome!

🥖 // Jumping ahead to day 9 of #memademay2023 because while I’ve been using at least one me-made item everyday, I haven’t been able to keep up with the photography.

In any event, some things I definitely need to prioritise on the sewing queue: (1) high-waisted shorts, hopefully denim or canvas - I live in these uniqlo shorts (I have 3 identical ones); (2) pouches - Bao has sized up his diapers and they need a bigger pouch to hold them in the diaper bag; and (3) MORE MORE MORE tshirts. At least I’ve got a start on the last one - I managed to bang out a new one today!

🌺 // I’m late once again with day 6 of #memademay2023 but for good reason… at long last I’ve revived my blog! I have a couple of posts lined up already to keep the momentum going, and I wanted to kick it off with a review of the #closetcorecielo that I wore on Sunday.

This isn’t the first Cielo Top I’ve made (the first being a linen short-sleeved version back in 2021), but it’s the first of the lantern sleeve view that is giving SERIOUS big sleeve energy. For years I didn’t dare go anywhere near those sleeves, but inspired by @fionamakes ‘ elasticated cuff version I decided to give it a go… and then never wore it out. This is a prime example of why #mmm2023 is so great, it gave me the push I needed to finally road test it 😂

Post-wear, I must say I love the concept, but for some reason the sleeves keep twisting on me and the elastic cuffs need adjustment as well (one is too tight). More details up on the blog, but safe to say I’d need some adjustments before I attempt this one again.

🍭 // Weekends are always a crazy time for our fam, so it’s little surprise I’m late! I missed out on photographing day 5 (a me-made purse), but I do happen to have some throwback photos of day 6’s exact outfit!

These snaps are from our recent trip to Kuantan, where we found a super cute mural art street, many of which had trick-eye effects. I couldn’t resist snapping make photos of my new tee with this whirlpool giving paddle pop vibes 😍

Hands down this is one of my favourite ‘fit combis of late: high-waisted denim shorts paired with various bamboo spandex tees. Since all my bamboo spandex fabrics are either from @baoberryfabrics or @bigandbravefabrics , be prepared for a parade of them coming this month 😂

🦥// It’s May the Fourth, but no Star Wars tribute is forthcoming from me - though I did require the force today to survive running after an active toddler this public holiday.

Today’s #memademay2023 day 4 features an assortment of toys and books I handled today and an oversized Tyra tee. If there was ever a tee that taught me there is value in matching one’s serger thread to a make - it’s this. The serged edges are so visible through the wide armholes and it’s instant regret, every time I put on this tee 🥲 yet I still wear it so I suppose this pattern is worth another try.

If I recall right, the fabric is the Evolve knit from @bigandbravefabrics . It’s a lovely fabric but on hindsight too heavy for this oversized top. Would have been fantastic as a fitted tee or leggings though. Oh well, as a tailor once warned my husband when she found out I was learning to sew: “she’ll have to waste a lot of money and fabric before she gets really good but it will be worth it”.

Anyway here’s day 2! When I first made this I commented that I thought this jersey might be too structured for the capped grown-on sleeve style. After some wear it’s softened up beautifully and I like it a lot more! This is a pattern I’ll need to revisit this month 😍

🛻 🚗 🚙 // Every time I meet someone new, they assume I sew for Bao. Truth be told, I’ve made him less than 5 things so far because we had lots of great hand-me-downs and kids grow so fast, I felt it wasn’t worth my time and effort.

Well, Bao has FINALLY outgrown all of his hand-me-downs and now only wants to wear shorts and tees, so I figured now would be the time to batch sew him some new clothing. This vehicle shirt is the first of many!

I went by his RTW sizing (and then one size up) but alas his prosperous belly means it is slightly tight around the tummy and a bit too long for him right now. I batch cut a few more in this same size already (90) but moving forward I’ll probably go up another size but shorten the length.

🩳 #TTCoastalCuffedShorts // For someone who liv

🩳 #TTCoastalCuffedShorts // For someone who lives in shorts (like literally everyday, year round), I haven’t made very many of them. A large part of it is that I’m still intimidated by pants fitting, but also I just haven’t found that many patterns that are easy to make in a style that I like.

When @twigandtale gave me the chance to try out their new Coastal Cuffed Shorts as a Sew+Show, I figured this was the push I needed to finally get into shorts making. I wasn’t disappointed! I used just a metre of @baoberryfabrics tencel twill and it came together really quick in one afternoon. I had no problems at all with fit through the hips or thighs (which is a usual fitting issue for my wide hips and chunky thighs).

One thing to note though is that this pattern is designed to sit at the low waist instead of the natural waist. In view of this, I shortened the rise as suggested by the instructions (I’m 162cm tall and the pattern is drafted for a height of 165cm) but found myself regretting it as I much prefer high rise bottoms. I’ve cut out another version of the pattern in cotton canvas with a higher rise and I’m excited to see how that will turn out!

#sewfastsewfurious 💨

I’ll be honest, speed sewing a @sewoveritlondon #soigiselledress dress in 6 hours FLAT (10.30am to 4.30pm!) was nutty but I loved it 😂 I mean, my favourite video game is diner dash so how could I not?

And it was so much fun to know that so many of you were with me in spirit cheering me on - sewing people are the best people! ❤️

That being said, I want to make clear that this was only possible because (a) I’ve made the #soigiselle before and knew that no fit modifications were needed, (b) I’ve made a GAZILLION of this sort of darted bodice, panelled skirt and invisible zipper dresses over the past 9 years and I can basically do this in my sleep, and (c) I didn’t take any food or water or toilet breaks 😅 Literally nobody should be expected to make a dress in 6 hours unless you want to, and woe betide any non-sewist who thinks it is easy or possible to whip up an outfit in a couple of hours (you will incur the collective wrath of the sewing world).

I think #sewfastsewfurious might become a regular thing over here, just because I love a speed challenge and I get bored of multi-day projects sometimes 😅 yay or nay?

I finally finished stitching this last night and I love this pattern and fabric pairing! A bit more about the hacks I made to this pattern in tomorrow’s post, but for now - this is our @baoberryfabrics Follow the Star printed on midweight cotton 💫 Inspired by the nativity story, I love how it’s super subtle and wearable for everyday. In fact my husband agreed to let me make a shirt for him in this fabric 😉 any print that men agree to wear is a win in my book.

A bit about this new fabric base - our midweight cotton is 148gsm and is pure cotton. It’s got no drape and handles like cotton poplin, which means it’s particularly great for shirts and perhaps even shorts! I know this will be my go-to for lighter coloured men’s shirts as it isn’t sheer even in a light base colour.

🌱 // When we were brainstorming ideas for this @baoberryfabrics collection, I asked @kristenkiong about including a large scale abstract print. Like magic, she already had something in mind 😉 this print inspired by the parable of the sower - hence the name “Sower”.

We knew that this print needed to be shown off in all its glory, so we opted to print it in a rayon that is flowy and drapey and luscious. For maximum effect, I sewed it into a maxi #wikstenshiftdress .

This print is really subtle, and great for both work and casual wear. Re sheerness of the cream coloured base printed on rayon - I would say it depends on your comfort level. To my eye, it isn’t any more sheer than a regular cream coloured rayon RTW blouse, but if you’re uncomfortable it would definitely benefit from lining or a slip. For ref, I’m wearing nude coloured undergarments here. Our tencel twill base would likely provide more opacity, but again, it depends on your comfort level.

#SOILILIANBLOUSE // It’s been a while since my last pattern insider post but I’m back now with my first make of 2023 (made with @baoberryfabrics of course 😉)!

I’m most in love with the shawl collar of this blouse, though I admit I did find the collar construction quite fiddly. Most of the other pattern insiders had no issues though, so I’m inclined to think it’s a me-problem! Especially since this make took me 8h15m start to finish (swipe to see my time tally).

ALSO PSA: the pattern calls for 2.1m of 1.4m wide fabric for my size (8-10), but I managed to make this out of just 1m of 58” wide fabric! This opens up a whole new option for those of you hoarding 1m remnants 🎉

🌸// For someone who didn’t think she could wear pink, I’ve been wearing a whole lot of pink lately 😅

This not so little number was made back in June, whipped up overnight just in time for a family shoot to celebrate Bao’s first birthday 🥹 I love that I chose the #hallondress with the delicate straps and low back that remind me so much of my wedding dress - it’s like my wedding dress got updated to suit this current phase of mum life (proof in the pics 😉).

I haven’t gotten close ups of the details just yet, but until then enjoy these beautiful snaps by @photorikiki . Thank you so much for capturing these beautiful images of our little family! ❤️ Time is so fleeting with babies, it’s been barely 5 months and Bao has lost the babyness and is well on his way to toddlerhood 🥹

🌸// When I was trying to land on a tshirt pattern to use, I knew I wanted (a) one I already had printed, (b) a swing style but fitted through the shoulders, and (c) round or boat neckline.

I went through a couple of options: the Named Inari (not the right shape and the fit through the arms was iffy for me), SOI Molly (okay, but I didn’t want a scoop neck), JP Tyra Tee (too oversized) or Misusu Rowan tee (wasn’t feeling the capped sleeves)… yes, I own a crap ton of patterns, I’m aware I have a problem 😅

Eventually I remembered that I loved the fit of the Named Kielo so I traced off the sleeved version and hacked it into a swing top! Basically, I marked 1cm below the bottom of the armsyce, and marked the desired width of the flare at the hip line, and connected the two points. Draw in a hem and true up the side seams, and that was it.

A swing top hacked from the @namedclothing #kielowrapdress in bamboo spandex 😉 did you guess right? Would I recommend doing this hack with a cotton spandex? Probably not. Flared tops like this require something with lots and lots of drape, so cotton spandex is a little too stiff. Would I make this again and again? Yes, oh yes.

👕 // Someone described my style as “mummy-practical” the other day, and I love it! Such an accurate descriptor of my uniform in this phase of wfh, toy toting and toddler chasing - RTW high-waisted denim shorts and an assortment of t-shirts 😂

I dearly miss wearing me-made, so it was high time a t-shirt make was in order. I’ve made tees out of cotton spandex before (remember my croissant tee last Christmas?) but I hardly reach for them as they feel a bit too structured / heavy for casual wear.

What a difference bamboo spandex makes you guys! This tee feels so light and cooling, doesn’t cling to my mommy pouch, and has barely any bulk when tucked in (my styling preference for loose fit tees). Also I was hesitant about pink, but it goes really well with my skin tone and light wash denim! 😍 this is one make I’m proud to add to my momiform capsule wardrobe.
